Are We Being Conditioned To Accept Nuclear War? Comment by Larry Ross, March 24, 2007
Have you ever wondered why people were so worried about nuclear dangers in past decades, yet so unconcerned now? One reason is that in spite of many nuclear crisis - (remember how people evacuated US cities during the Cuban missile crisis) - nothing ever happened. So people are used to the dire predictions never eventuating. Also, with the end of the cold war, they have been taught to believe that the nuclear risks have decreased, and some undoubtedly have. But some, and new risks, have got much worse. The media deliberately avoids informing the public about the increasing nuclear risks; that the US Defence budget is the highest in history; and that the Bush Administration is making new nuclear weapons to go with the new nuclear doctrines. Another reason for lack of concern is the power of the mass media to influence people's opinions and reactions. By withholding information, such as the increasing nuclear threats, minimizing or biased treatment of the information they do print, presenting new important information as if it is a normal, even routine and perfectly acceptable development, they are biasing the way you regard such information. Often vitally important information and news stories will not be printed. Or, if printed, will be in small print with small headlines and will be missed by most busy people. A good example is the 2002 story that Bush now has the US legal right to wage pre-emptive nuclear war against both nuclear and non-nuclear states on the basis of his own and his Administration's suspicions that they may become an enemy and attack the US sometime in the future. In other words a paranoid's dream legislation. Also, that Bush, or US leaders that may follow, may introduce nuclear weapons into conventional conflicts. These are both very important stories that deserve front page headline treatment. But many people never saw such news because the media did not print it, or buried it on a back page in small print. The media did this deliberately for the purpose of gaining acceptability for Bush's new nuclear doctrines. Because this news is not printed, or is presented in such a 'hum-drum' or 'ho-hum' unimportant manner, that is the way people regard it. They have been adroitly influenced to regard nuclear war, and Bush's right to wage nuclear war on his own authority against almost any state, as a perfectly normal, non-news development. Considering the lack of public uproar, or awareness, most people have accepted this dangerous threat to humanity as not worth worrying about. Politicians and editors repeat the mantra for the people: "The cold war's over, no more nuclear worries etc" A few observant commentators on internet believe Orwell's book "1984" and Huxley's "Brave New World" have actually become realities in many respects. When 'Big Brother' decides to demonise a new enemy prior to attack, such as Iran, the media say "yes sir" and start conditioning the people accordingly. It has certainly happened in Christchurch New Zealand, as it's happened throughout the US regarding the lies on Iraq and new lies and right-wing extremist commentary on Iran. Bush couldn't hope for a more compliant opposition on Iran than Hillary Clinton and most of the Democratic politicians who parrot Bush's lies. With the capitulation of the Democrats to Bushism, and continued funding of their war on Iraq, there is almost a 'cultural' embrace of maniacal, perpetual war doctrines against any nation the leader chooses (particularly if they have oil resources), whenever he chooses. As in "1984" the people have hardly any awareness of how they have accepted the new 'perpetual war' doctrines and 'new enemies wherever and whenever Big Brother decrees' doctrines. They just remember that if they say "no" or express doubt, then "they are helping the terrorists". So most stay silent, hoping their very own mad bogey man will wither away. Because of the mass silence and acquiescence, he's getting stronger, and with a few well-staged tricks, he and/or his successors, may last in power 'due to his engineered new crisis' well beyond 2008. Remembering the Lies to Justify Bush's War on Iraq You may remember Bush's lies about the Saddam Hussein threat, such as his alleged weapons of mass destruction, making nuclear weapons, links to Ad Qaeda, links to Bin-Laden, and links to the 9/11 attacks. These lies were repeated over and over and over again by the mass media in the US , UK , Australia and New Zealand . To my knowledge no mass media apologised to their readers for lying to them, or repeatedly printing these lies as truth. When the truth about the lies became common knowledge, they still did not apologise. There were no WMD, no nuclear weapons, no Saddam links to 9/11, Bin Laden, Al Qaeda or international terrorism. How many of your political leaders and MP's acknowledge the fact of the lies, and that they themselves may have lied in support of President Bush's lies? Think about it. The Next Oil Target - Iran The corporate media often print important news this way in the US and elsewhere, because of their links to the Bush Administration, to the Republican Party and overseas owners with such links. Four years later they are printing the same kind of lies by the same President Bush and his Administration, about Iran - the next target on their war list. Not surprisingly, it has large oil resources. Busy people, even politicians, often have short memories - very, very short. They buy the papers, watch TV, absorb the lies and base their opinions on those lies. Often they don't disagree, because they don't wish to be considered as Bush says, "helping the terrorists". Remember a few years back people and their politicians were just as careful that their views "did not help the Communists" - the enemy 'flavour-of-the-month' for the cold war years. Happy Consumers -Easily Conditioned We 'consumers' are an easily-conditioned lot. Millions and millions of dollars are paid to Psychological Warfare specialists, Public Relations people, and Information officers to ensure that people think as they have been programmed by the mass media to think, and act in a way to support those leaders who lie repeatedly to get our support for their wars. As they plan on soon waging a nuclear war on Iran and perhaps other Middle East states, an essential element is gaining the acceptance of their populations for this step. The media - Newspapers - TV - Radio has been of great help to the Bush Administration in presenting, with-holding or biasing the news, editorial comment, and commentators in such a way that you will think the way the Bush.Administration wants you to think if (or when) he stage-manages a justification to nuclear bomb Iran. Without doubt or questions, the mass media will report any Bush staged-managed justification for nuclear war on Iran as factual. Questions and 'Doubting-Thomas' articles will not be allowed, or will be downgraded. The media's belief and faith in our President as the 'new hero' will be all encompassing. But In spite of all this conditioning, the people are waking up. In the last few months the number of people worried and/or writing about the danger of a nuclear war with Iran has risen to 19 million, as indicated in the Google search below. As all life in our world is threatened with nuclear extinction, as never before, I urge you chose from the following articles, those you think may be most relevant.
