The Brink of Armageddon

Comment by Larry Ross, May 16, 2006

1,800 physicists have warned that we face human extinction if Bush's continues with his new nuclear doctrines, and proceeds with his strategy to use nuclear weapons against Iran or in other conflict. Many other well-informed experts have warned humanity with the same message. There are many reasons that nuclear weapons use would trigger rapid escalation to global nuclear war, and destruction of all life.

There were 100,000 deaths due to the Hiroshima bomb in 1945. The physicists say that today there are nuclear weapons equivalent to 200,000 Hiroshima's in the 8 nuclear weapons arsenals. That's enough to kill 20 trillion people, or overkill all 7 billion of the world's population 2.8 billion times over. Of course not all weapons would be used, and certainly not evenly distributed. But the surplus killing power is astronomical.

Many nations also have arsenals of other weapons as well as weapons of mass destruction (WMD) such as chemical, biological, and radiological weapons. Previous inhibitions and treaty  controls against their use would be discarded if Bush started a pre-emptive nuclear war. International law is just a quaint relic to Bush and his supporters and New Zealand's nuclear free laws are just an irritation they are determined to get rid of. Some individuals and political parties would do the same if in power.

Nations may wonder whose next for a surprise pre-emptive nuclear attack. So it is mistaken for people anywhere in the world, to think that somehow, they would escape the widening ripple effects of a tactical nuclear weapon use.

In the long run, radiation, disease, nuclear winter and lack of food would kill those that initially escaped, or eventually kill those families in a situation of extreme suffering dying slowly from the multiple effects. There are no safe places, such as remote locations or fall-out shelters, that would indefinitely extend life.
People can check these facts, and decide if they wish to do anything to prevent such a disaster from enveloping their families, or help those few people who are trying to warn others and working to prevent it.

This is not secret knowledge but well-known facts which every expert and decision-maker should know and verify if there is the slightest doubt. People such as previous U.S. Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara have said it is a miracle that the 1962 Cuban missile crisis did not explode into a nuclear holocaust. Retired U.S. General Lee Butler, previously in charge of U.S. nuclear weapons, said it was a miracle or act of providence that there had not yet been a nuclear holocaust.

How long do people think this kind of luck can continue?  Many other incidents have almost resulted in nuclear war. That's why such huge efforts have been made to achieve various arms control and disarmament treaties. However George Bush and his aides have decided that their nuclear weapons can now be used. They have decided they can end the 60-year ban on the use of nuclear weapons. They are ignoring or withdrawing from disarmament treaties, and think nuclear weapons can be used with impunity and be controlled. They try to persuade others that events will never escalate out of control.

Bush nuclear weapons psywar campaigns try to persuade people that they are safe and will not have their lives disturbed by the use of a few nuclear weapons on the other side of the world.

However, objective experts such as the 1,800 physicists below, are warning us that there are appalling risks that Bush's new pre-emptive nuclear war doctrines and adventurism, risks ending life on earth.

Physicists Say No To Nuking Iran

Alexandra Walker, April 24, 2006

A group of 1,800 physicists, including five Nobel prize winners, sent a letter last week to the president admonishing his administration for "policies that open the door" to using nuclear weapons against Iran:

It is gravely irresponsible for the U.S. as the greatest superpower to consider courses of action that could eventually lead to the widespread destruction of life on the planet. We urge the administration to announce publicly that it is taking the nuclear option off the table in the case of all non-nuclear adversaries, present or future, and we urge the American people to make their voices heard on this matter.

U.S. Physicists Tell Bush "Don't Use Nuclear Weapons Against Iran"

Top U.S. physicists say " U.S. plans to reportedly use nuclear weapons against Iran were "gravely irresponsible" and warning that such action would have "disastrous consequence for the security of the United States and the world". Last fall 1,800 U.S. physicists repudiated new U.S. nuclear policies that include pre-emptive use of nuclear weapons against others. They said the Hiroshima bomb killed 100,000 people. Today the world's nuclear arsenals have 200,000 times the explosive force of the Hiroshima bomb - enough to kill the world's entire population many times over.
