http://www.mapw.org.au/nuclear/nac/2003/03-10-16howard.html#action
Dear
friends,
ACTION on NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT! FAX the government!
send before the 27 October
Call on Australia to support for the New Agenda Coalition (NAC) Resolutions
on nuclear disarmament to be voted on in the UN 1st Committee on disarmament
next week in New York. http://www.mapw.org.au/nuclear/nac/2003/nac2003.pdf
DFAT are yet to brief Downer on Australia's decision - and the changes
to the NAC resolutions this year adress Australia's previous concerns
(see MPI memo http://www.mapw.org.au/nuclear/nac/2003/mpimemo.doc)
The New Agenda Resolutions are:
Towards a nuclear-weapon-free world: the need for a new agenda
and
Reduction of non-strategic nuclear weapons and consequential votes in
the UN General Assembly.
See here for more info:
http://www.mapw.org.au/nuclear/unga.html
http://www.mapw.org.au/nuclear/nac/2003/09-23ministers-unga.html
We are calling on Australia to support the NAC resolutions this year.
Australia abstained last year. Delegates will vote on the texts sometime
between the 27 October and 7 November. ( We are also hoping that a draft
Senate Motion http://www.mapw.org.au/nuclear/nac/2003/03-10-27nac-senate.html
calling on the government to support the resolutions will go to vote
in the senate on the 27/28 October - it was postponed from the 14th
October. Downer will probably be briefed early next week) So
send before the 27 October!!!!
Please send emails/ faxes to call on the Australian government to support
these resolutions!
Suggested text:
"I call on the Australian government to commit to peace and disarmament
by supporting and voting yes to the New Agenda Coalition (NAC) resolutions
on nuclear disarmament before the UN 1st Committee and General Assembly
in 2003:
Towards a nuclear-weapon-free world: the need for a new agenda (item
A/C.1/58/L.40);
and
Reduction of non-strategic nuclear weapons (A/C.1/58/L.39)
The NAC resolutions provide a balanced approach to the issues of non-proliferation
and disarmament. The resolutions reflect the reality that non-proliferation
and nuclear disarmament are mutually reinforcing processes, and that
steady progress towards complete nuclear disarmament is required if
we are to stem and fully reverse proliferation. "
