Physicists Warn Bush Not To Use Nuclear Weapons Against Iran

Comment by Larry Ross, April 22, 2007

The Physicists letter, although published in 2006, deserves more consideration. These are the experts who created the bomb and warn of the dire consequences of its use.

If nuclear weapons are used against Iran, there is a danger of an escalation to global war and the use of the 8-9 nuclear weapon arsenals.

There are enough nuclear weapons to equal 200,000 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb. Potentially that is enough to kill 200 billion people.

That's a huge overkill potential, as there are only 6 billion people on the planet. But still governments are spending huge sums to create and refine a variety of evermore powerful nuclear and hydrogen weapons, and now space weapons. Where and when does it end?

If rationality guided human behaviour, people would be worried enough to do something to reduce this threat. Unfortunately they have learned to accept this threat as just an unpleasant fact of life. The media certainly accept it as a normal part of our existence and seldom refer to this threat. It can be unleashed suddenly by "accident, miscalculation or act of madness" as President Kennedy warned in 1962. In 2007 the Bush Administration is making the use of nuclear weapons a normal extension of conventional weapons. A pre-emptive nuclear war is now legal under US law, and something the President, in his wisdom, may do on his own authority - suddenly.

Since when have people decided that an ex-alcoholic Fundamentalist President who believes in Armageddon, lies and war crimes, has the wisdom to decide to use nuclear weapons? Bush tells us that God speaks to him and approves his wars. Congress has approved and they made it legal for Bush to do it. The mass media has decided its okay not to warn the public. They have presented this sensationally threatening story in tiny, buried print, as the most normal, natural thing in the world. So the people accept it without protest. For good measure the media prevents comment or criticism including critical letters. The Bush regime has succeeded in making this greatest threat to humanity, a non-issue.

Is it possible for irrational, destructive humans to prevent a nuclear extinction of the species? Or are people determined to bury this problem and pretend it does not exist?

Since 2005 Prof Hirsch, the originator of the Physicists letter, has written five or more articles on the dangers of a nuclear war on Iran . Even this has not produced a noticeable public reaction or angry rejection of Bush's power to do this to the 6 billion people on this planet. Can anyone explain this silence?

Prominent U.S. Physicists Send Letter to President Bush,
Call Nuclear Weapons Against Iran ‘Gravely Irresponsible’

By Kim McDonald, April 17, 2006

Thirteen of the nation’s most prominent physicists have written a letter to President Bush, calling U.S. plans to reportedly use nuclear weapons against Iran “gravely irresponsible” and warning that such action would have “disastrous consequences for the security of the United States and the world.”

The physicists include five Nobel laureates, a recipient of the National Medal of Science and three past presidents of the American Physical Society, the nation’s preeminent professional society for physicists.

Their letter was prompted by recent articles in the Washington Post, New Yorker and other publications that one of the options being considered by Pentagon planners and the White House in a military confrontation with Iran includes the use of nuclear bunker busters against underground facilities. These reports were neither confirmed nor denied by White House and Pentagon officials.
