Countdown to Doomsday?

Comment by Larry Ross, February 3, 2007

Robert Parry, a long-time Washington insider and commentator, presents a very informed, powerful and convincing article that the Bush Administration is on course to start a war with Iran , beginning with a massive bombing campaign.

There are many things that really impress me about this article, and I will mention two:

  1. That so many powerful Americans and forces such as the media, are embracing Bush's lies and false justifications for a war that could spawn multiple long-term disasters, against US and world interests.
  2. That a majority of Americans, even though criminally deceived by Bush over his war on Iraq, nevertheless accept his lies about Iran.

Some of the many disadvantages to the US and the world are mentioned along with an alternative scenario that peace people could pursue if they are able to devote some time to prevent a world disaster.

Parry illuminates many previously little known facts - such as that various leading Democrats such as Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator John Edwards and others have expressed strong support for a US attack on Iran, and no opinions or questions as to the advisability or potential disastrous consequences of such action or the false accusations of the Bush regime. Many democrats are helping build a false case against Iran.

There are some factors not mentioned in the article that readers may fill in from other articles on this site as follows.

  1. Little mention that Bush is planning to use nuclear weapons against Iran and the potential long-term disastrous consequences.
  2. No mention that Bush is working to provoke some kind of Iranian response, or stage some kind of 'False Flag' operation that he can then blame on Iran in order to justify a nuclear attack, and that with media support, convince many people that his attack is justified.
  3. No mention, or refutation, of Bush's present false accusations against Iran, that are so important to building support for Bush's lies. Such as that Iran has no nuclear weapons, or programme to make them, does not support terrorism, does not condone "wiping Israel off the map", and is not helping kill US soldiers in Iraq.
  4. Parry makes a powerful case that US war plans are proceeding, and will happen soon, but no mention of when. Some authoritative articles on this site predict Bush will start his new war before the end of April 2007 - less than 2 months from now. So action must be taken now. Later - after long-lasting multiple disasters - will be too late.

War on Iran: Stop Bush Before He Starts

by Robert Parry, Consortium News, February 3, 2007

Much as he did before the Iraq invasion, George W. Bush is limiting the debate about war with Iran, offering assurances that he considers war "a last resort" even as he moves his military forces into place.

Bush is following the same course he chose in the run-up to war in Iraq: he insists that war is "a last resort" yet puts in motion the engines of war; he times the release of alarming intelligence reports for maximum political effect; he brushes aside doubts and warnings; he then presents war as unavoidable or a fait accompli .

Despite the painful lessons from the Iraq War disaster -- including more than 3,000 U.S. soldiers dead and Iraq torn apart by sectarian civil war -- the key institutions of Washington, particularly the Congress and the press, are playing similar roles, too.

The capital again is possessed of an air of unreality as the clock ticks down to a likely military showdown with Iran. Though the documentary record is now clear that Bush set his sights on war in Iraq a year or so before the actual invasion, the President is still believed when he insists now that he wants a diplomatic solution with Iran.
