Letter to all M.P.s Press Release March 6, 2007: To Honour and Celebrate the Speaker available on Benefits Verses Immanent Dangers
David Lange promised in 1984, "Elect Labour and we'll make all of New Zealand Nuclear Free" In spite of overseas allies and National Party opposition, Parliament legislated to make New Zealand nuclear free on August 6, 1987. New Zealand 's Nuclear-Free image helps sell goods overseas, attracts tourists, and is a source of pride and identity for New Zealanders. It boosts our standing and influence internationally as an independent, impartial, trustworthy state. Our 'nuclear free' foreign policy helps us say "no" to U.S. requests for combat troops in illegal wars such as Iraq. It's not anti-US. It's anti-nuclear weapons and the new threats to use them in pre-emptive nuclear wars, or introduce them in conventional wars. The new nuclear doctrines threaten all mankind, including Americans. People throughout the world have expressed appreciation for New Zealand 's courageous stand. It contributes to our positive image in the world. Please don't throw away New Zealand 's nuclear free security, and this financial asset. Since 1984 we have been under pressure to change the Nuclear-Free Act and to allow NZ port facilities to be used by US and UK nuclear warships. These pressures could increase, especially if there is an international crisis. Those Neo-conservatives who opposed NZ's nuclear-free policy are in key positions of power in the Bush Administration. New terrorist acts predicted by the F.B.I., or new so-called “wars against terrorism” can result in new and wider wars in the Middle East. The US may use nuclear weapons as President Bush implied when he repeatedly warned Iran that "all options are on the table." The consequences could be catastrophic, long-lasting, result in wider wars and even escalate into a global nuclear conflagration. Iraq was innocent of US accusations as is Iran today of similar accusations. There are no legitimate grounds to attack Iran. The 'Cold War' is over but the various nuclear threats have never been greater. Doctrines of pre-emptive nuclear war and using nuclear weapons in conventional wars, added to the growing proliferation threat of 9 NW states, can lead to a fiery end for humanity. By remaining nuclear free, New Zealand boosts its security, is a leader in nuclear disarmament and steps to peace, and is an example and beacon of hope to other states. Changing NZ legislation to allow nuclear warship visits, would damage our security, trade, tourism and our 'nuclear-free, clean and green' image as well as our reputation as an independent leader in nuclear disarmament. The restored nuclear alliance with NZ support for questionable wars would make NZ ports potential terrorist and nuclear targets. If contacted I will answer questions, elaborate on issues with documentation as requested, and be willing to speak on this and related matters anywhere in New Zealand. These include: "Increasing Nuclear Threats" "Why We Should Keep NZ Nuclear Free" "World Dangers from a Nuclear Assault on Iran " "World War Dangers from New 'False Flag' Operations" "The Illegal Iraq Quagmire". Help New Zealand retain its nuclear-free policy, by talking about it to friends, workmates, groups and your M.P. Celebrate it with group or city functions. Strengthen it if possible. The Public needs educating about nuclear war, weapons, proliferation, dangers and today's relevance of New Zealand's nuclear free policies. Members of Parliament in particular are well-placed to educate, legislate, speak and act in many ways on nuclear issues.
